How to Make the Most of Your Old Business Laptops

Saturday, July 21, 2012 | comments

Are the computers and laptops in your office beginning to outlive their usefulness? Are they becoming slower compared to the new software you need, or getting uglier because of the constant wear and tear? Don't give up on those old business computers just yet. You may have some solutions, and not even one of them requires replacing an entire office of computers. This guide will present some low-budget options for the frugal office manager.

Don't Let Those Old Laptops Go to Waste

First things first: take those old computers in for a tune-up. Any laptop repair service should be able to give you a simple quote over the phone so you can see whether the replacement parts are still available and cost-effective. New hardware is cheaper than buying new computers, and a new hard drive or an upgraded motherboard can make all the difference.

The most modern solution involves moving to the "cloud". Cloud computing is the future of business technology and many of today's most versatile and cost-effective software packages are hosted entirely online, or "in the cloud". You don't install cloud services. Everything in a cloud-powered software package is located online, and in most cases, only uses as much processing power as ordinary internet browsing. It's a great way to stretch those machines into doing more with less.

Did the tune-up fail to increase your computer speed and power as much as you wanted? Are the services you need unavailable in cloud format? Consider prioritization. It is one of the last available efforts to retain your old computers while creating the ability to upgrade to the newer software you want and need.

Prioritize the employees or departments that need the new computers - now that computers are intentionally designed to communicate well with each other, the compatibility issues are severely reduced. Many companies operate with a mish-mash of computers with few, if any, conflicts. If other coworkers deserve an upgrade that you cannot afford, you might want to direct some of the funds into a nice piece of technology that the entire office can share as to alleviate the negative feelings.

Is the feat impossible? At least you can always count on refurbished and factory recertified laptops. These used machines often come with warranties so you don't have to worry about the risk. We hope you don't have to invest much money, though, and are able to work with the ideas above - a well-equipped office is a productive office!
